PhD Dissertation


My PhD research explores how invasive plant species (Phragmites australis subsp. australis and Typha x glauca) and their management influence wetland ecosystems, with a focus on restoring biodiversity and ecological function. I take a community ecology approach, studying multiple groups of organisms—from plants and aquatic invertebrates to mammals and waterbirds—to understand how wetlands respond to both invasion and restoration efforts. 
In my first chapter, I compare plant and invertebrate communities across Phragmites-invaded, treated, and non-invaded wetlands to understand how invasive plant management actions shape biodiversity. 

My second chapter evaluates a mechanical control methodcalled 'Rolling' to determine its effectiveness in managing invasive Phragmites and promoting native vegetation recovery. 
In my third chapter, I examine how wildlife, including mammals and waterbirds, use invaded and managed wetlands, linking vegetation structure to habitat quality. 

My final chapter focuses on restoration outcomes, assessing how functional diversity in plant and benthic invertebrate communities recovers following the removal of invasive cattail hybrids. 
Overall, my research aims to determine whether restoration efforts are truly rebuilding healthy, functioning ecosystems—not just changing which species are present, but restoring the roles they play in the environment.
